Nanoscale spinning magnetic droplets created

Mar. 14, 2013 ? Researchers have successfully created a magnetic soliton -- a nano-sized, spinning droplet that was first theorized 35 years ago. These solitons have implications for the creation of magnetic, spin-based computers.

Solitons are waves, localized in space, that preserve their size and momentum. They were first observed in water. Solitons composed of light have proved useful for long distance, high speed information transmission. But droplet solitons had never been observed in a magnetic environment, although scientists believed they could exist there.

North Carolina State University mathematician Mark Hoefer had created a mathematical model of what such a soliton might look like. When physicist Johan ?kerman and graduate student Majid Mohseni from Sweden's Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and the University of Gothenburg got experimental data that seemed to correspond with Hoefer's model, they decided to try and confirm the existence of a magnetic droplet soliton.

The physicists used a nanoscale wire to deliver a small amount of DC current to a magnet. All electrons possess angular momentum in the form of spin. Picture a spinning top. Angular momentum is what keeps that top upright, or pointed in a particular direction. Each electron within the magnet is like a spinning top, and in magnets, all of the electrons' spins are aligned in roughly the same way. Putting DC current into that group of electrons injects energy into the magnetic system, changing the spin of the local electrons in that immediate area. The spins of the electrons then precess, or "lean" like a top does when it is no longer upright, which causes a tiny spinning magnetic droplet, or soliton, to form.

The scientists were able to detect the soliton's presence by measuring the frequency of the precession. They observed the soliton's unique signature -- a pronounced drop in frequency coupled with a large jump in power output -- and knew they had been successful.

"These solitons are called 'dissipative,' because magnets want to dissipate energy from precession," Hoefer says. "They maintain their stability by balancing the amount of energy coming into the system via the DC current with the amount going out, and by balancing the nonlinearity, or amplitude, with dispersion, or a tendency to spread out."

In addition to demonstrating the existence of these solitons, the researchers also noted some other interesting properties of the solitons, including oscillatory motion and a periodic deformation they referred to as "breathing."

The researchers' findings appear in Science.

"Solitons are excellent transmitters of information, so finding them in a magnetic system could have all sorts of implications for spin-based computing, from new ways to process information to higher density hard drives," Hoefer says.

Miller Musings: Welcome to Toddler Town

Since Henry's birthday it seems like we've all the sudden made the full switch from baby to toddler. ?It's not just the walking thing, though that's a big part of it! ?He looks different, and acts different, and we're having to adjust to toddler mode.

Some signs you may be living in toddler town as well:

-All your canned goods have dents in them because the pantry cabinet will keep a toddler occupied much longer than any toy.

-You carry raisins in your purse at all times, and you don't even eat raisins.

-Your cabinets are suddenly full?of brightly colored, plastic sippy cups and bowls with suction cups on the bottom,?when they were formerly just full of clear, (highly breakable), glass.

-Diaper changes have become a battle of wills and you come away from every one thinking you really need to reinstate your gym membership. ?How can someone so small be so freakishly strong anyway?!

-It's no longer safe to keep toilet paper on the actual roll in your house.

-You have more than 20 board books completely memorized and can recite them on demand.

-You realize that song that's been stuck in your head all day, and you've been humming all over town, is the counting song the rocking horse sings when you press the red triangle button.

-You find the tv remote, the phone, a graphing calculator, and a whisk inside a toy drum. ?Or a tractor push toy... ?Or anywhere else you least suspect them, the location also changes twice a week.

-Mega Blocks are EVERYWHERE even though you swear they were all picked up and put away the night before.

-You can't say the name of an animal without also saying what sound it makes. ?Ex. ?"Look a cow! MOOO! ?Do you see the cow? MOOOO!"

Yes, this picture is blurry. ?They're all blurry these days. ?

-You let your child play with all kinds of non-toy objects, anything that will get them to sit still for longer than 25 seconds. ?Henry's favorite this week is an old phone book.

-You forget there are child locks on the cabinets until someone comes over and can't get them open. ?Undoing the child lock is now second nature to you.

-Nothing breakable or important is within four inches of the edge of your counter tops or furniture. ?You know that things that live close to the edge tend to disappear.

-You come to the realization that you spent years completely taking for granted the opportunity to use the bathroom alone. ?It all the sudden seems serene to be able to pee without a toddler busting in the room.

-You're completely exhausted at the end of the day and cannot imagine why... ?the house is trashed, you had take out for dinner, (again), but you managed to keep another person alive and fed another day! ?SUCESS!

That's just life in our house lately! ?Fellow toddler mommas, is there anything else we need to add to the list? ;)

To be quite honest, I'm pretty excited to be transitioning out of the baby stage and in to the toddler stage. ?I know there are lots?of challenges in raising a toddler, but I've worked with toddlers in Mother's Day Out, and childcare, and VBS, and preschools for over 10 years. ?I love toddlers! ?I'm excited that Henry's moving in to the age where he can run around outside and do art projects! ?We're not quite there yet, we're still working on walking outside, (outside is tricky with all it's uneven surfaces and textures!), and H still prefers to eat crayons, but we'll get there soon!

Jennifer

P.S. ?Do you remember the hippo cupcake toppers I ordered for Henry's birthday party, that somehow got sent to our old address by mistake? ?They finally arrived yesterday, and they're so adorable!

I really wish we would have gotten them in time for the party, and now I'm not sure what to do with them! ?Looks like we'll be having some friends over for dinner and hippo cupcakes one random weeknight soon. ha!

Democrats wary of Japan entering trade talks

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Concerned that Japan's possible participation in ongoing trade talks among Pacific nations threatens the U.S. auto industry, Congressional Democrats raised their worries in a letter to President Barack Obama on Thursday.

At least four dozen House and Senate Democrats said Japan has a long history of erecting barriers against U.S. auto imports and resisting U.S. efforts to create a more level playing field, and that is unlikely to change if Japan joins the 11-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, negotiations aimed at establishing free trade principles.

Instead, they wrote, Japanese auto exports to the United States could increase if the United States eliminates its current 2.5 percent car tariffs and 25 percent truck tariffs.

"These longstanding economically harmful practices are not susceptible to cursory negotiations at this stage, three years into the U.S. involvement in the TPP negotiations and close to the administration's target date" for concluding the TPP talks, they wrote.

The administration has said it hopes to wrap up the negotiations by the end of this year. Last month, during a visit to Washington, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe signed a joint statement with Obama saying they would continue talks on Japan's "possible interest" in joining the TPP talks.

Among those signing the letter was Rep. Sander Levin of Michigan, champion of the auto industry and top Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, which oversees trade issues.

In the letter, the Democrats wrote that Japan now exports 120 automobiles to the United States for every U.S. auto exported to Japan. They also wrote that the two countries will remain close and important allies but "a flawed, one-way trade agreement that benefits Japan at the expense of the United States businesses and workers will not help strengthen this vital relationship."

Police say missing Hollywood executive was likely murdered

By Dan Whitcomb

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Detectives have uncovered evidence that a Hollywood studio executive who mysteriously vanished 10 months ago was murdered, even though they have yet to find his body, law enforcement officials said on Thursday.

Gavin Smith, a 57-year-old film distribution executive for 20th Century Fox, was last seen on the night of May 1, 2012, driving in his black Mercedes Benz away from a friend's house in Oak Park, northwest of Los Angeles.

Authorities issued a missing person bulletin for Smith, also known for playing on UCLA's 1975 national championship basketball team under legendary coach John Wooden, and asked for the public's help in finding him.

But the discovery of Smith's car in a storage facility in February led to a break in the case, Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

"This is a significant change in this case," Whitmore said. "The fact that they found the car, the condition of the car. Preliminarily, they believe Gavin Smith was murdered. The evidence is pretty sound."

Whitmore said detectives had also established what they believe was the motive for Smith's slaying, but he declined to discuss it further.

"They pretty much know what's going on," he said.

Police following a tip recovered the car in Simi Valley, about 20 miles by freeway from the unidentified friend's home in Oak Park. Smith's body has not been recovered.

The facility where the car was found was linked to a man currently being held at a Los Angeles County jail on an unrelated narcotics conviction, the sheriff's department said.

Whitmore said that man, John Creech, was considered a "person of interest" in the case, but has not been arrested or charged in Smith's disappearance.

MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE

It was not immediately clear if Smith and Creech were acquainted, but the missing man had met Creech's wife, Chandrika Creech, in rehab in 2009, Whitmore said.

"They had a relationship, but I'm not going to characterize what kind of relationship," he said.

Whitmore said detectives had spoken to Chandrika Creech and had served 25 to 30 search warrants in the sensational case. He said detectives had searched Creech's home and car, but declined to say if anything was taken as evidence.

An attorney for the Creeches could not be reached for comment on Thursday afternoon.

The sheriff's department said investigators were seeking public assistance in identifying anyone who may have helped move the Mercedes from an upscale Porter Ranch neighborhood of Los Angeles to the storage facility about a week after Smith went missing.

The sheriff's department did not say how they believe the Mercedes came to be in Porter Ranch - about 40 minutes by car from Oak Park, where Smith was last seen, and 20 minutes from Simi Valley, where it was ultimately found.

"We believe other people were involved in the aftermath of moving the car and moving the body," Lieutenant Dave Dolson told reporters.

When Smith drove away from his friend's home, wearing purple athletic pants belonging to one of his sons, he left behind his cellphone charger, shaving kit and other personal items, authorities say.

His disappearance made national headlines and prompted the film studio to issue a statement expressing concern.

Smith's family posted a $20,000 reward for information and pleaded with the public to help, saying the 6-foot, 6-inch former athlete with "movie star" looks should be easy to spot.

His son Evan Smith, a forward for the University of Southern California basketball team, took to Twitter to get the word out, tweeting messages such as "I will not stop until I find my father."

UN envoy says US drone strikes violate Pakistani sovereignty

Ben Emmerson, the UN special representative on human rights and counter-terrorism, said Pakistan confirmed at least 400 of its citizens have been killed in US drone attacks.

By Sebastian Abbot,?Associated Press / March 15, 2013

The head of a UN team investigating casualties from US drone strikes in Pakistan declared after a secret research trip to the country that the attacks violate Pakistan's sovereignty.

Ben Emmerson, the UN special rapporteur on human rights and counter-terrorism, said the Pakistani government made clear to him that it does not consent to the strikes ? a position that has been disputed by US officials.

President Barack Obama has stepped up covert CIA drone strikes targeting al-Qaeda and Taliban militants in Pakistan's tribal region along the Afghan border since he took office in 2009.

The strikes have caused growing controversy because of the secrecy surrounding them and claims that they have caused significant civilian casualties ? allegations denied by the United States.

According to a UN statement that Emmerson emailed to The Associated Press on Friday, the Pakistani government told him it has confirmed at least 400 civilian deaths by US drones on its territory. The statement was initially released on Thursday, following the investigator's three-day visit to Pakistan, which ended Wednesday. The visit was kept secret until Emmerson left.

Imtiaz Gul, an expert on Pakistani militancy who is helping Emmerson's team, said Friday that the organization he runs, the Center for Research and Security Studies, gave the UN investigator during his visit case studies on 25 strikes that allegedly killed around 200 civilians.

The UN investigation into civilian casualties from drone strikes and other targeted killings in Pakistan and several other countries was launched in January and is expected to deliver its conclusions in October.

The US rarely discusses the strikes in public because of their covert nature, but officials have said privately that they have caused very few civilian casualties.

A 2012 investigation by the AP into 10 of the deadliest recent drone strikes in Pakistan found that a significant majority of the casualties were militants, but civilians were also being killed.

Pakistani officials regularly criticize the attacks in public as a violation of the country's sovereignty, a popular position in a country where anti-American sentiment runs high.

But the reality has been more complicated in the past.

For many years, Pakistan allowed US drones to take off from bases within the country. Documents released by WikiLeaks in 2010 showed that senior Pakistani officials consented to the strikes in private to US diplomats, while at the same time condemning them in public.

Cooperation has certainly waned since then as the relationship between Pakistan and the US has deteriorated. In 2011, Pakistan kicked the US out of an air base used by American drones in the country's southwest, in retaliation for US airstrikes that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

But US officials insist privately that cooperation has not ended altogether, and key Pakistani military officers and civilian politicians continue to consent to the strikes.

However, Emmerson, the UN investigator, came away with a black and white view after his meetings with Pakistani officials.

"The position of the government of Pakistan is quite clear," said Emmerson. "It does not consent to the use of drones by the United States on its territory and it considers this to be a violation of Pakistan's sovereignty and territorial integrity."

The drone campaign "involves the use of force on the territory of another state without its consent and is therefore a violation of Pakistan's sovereignty," he said.

Pakistan claimed the drone strikes were radicalizing a new generation of militants and said it was capable of fighting the war against Islamist extremism in the country by itself, said Emmerson.

A major reason why the US has stepped up drone attacks in Pakistan is because it has failed to convince the government to target Taliban militants using its territory to launch cross-border attacks against American troops in Afghanistan.

Emmerson met with a variety of Pakistani officials during his visit, as well as tribal leaders from the North Waziristan tribal area ? the main target for US drones in the country ? and locals who claimed they were injured by the attacks or had lost loved ones.

The tribal leaders said innocent tribesmen were often mistakenly targeted by drones because they were indistinguishable from Taliban militants, said Emmerson. Both groups wear the same traditional tribal clothing and normally carry a gun at all times, he said.

"It is time for the international community to heed the concerns of Pakistan, and give the next democratically elected government of Pakistan the space, support and assistance it needs to deliver a lasting peace on its own territory without forcible military interference by other states," said Emmerson.

Sequester cancels Air Force air crew 'rodeo' in Washington State ...

The Pentagon is cancelling a well-loved Air Force competition at Joint Base Lewis-McChord this summer, grounding the air mobility ?rodeo? to save money.

About 20 air crews from a dozen nations were scheduled to visit McChord Air Field this July for the competition. Two years ago, teams came from as far away as Pakistan to practice with local airmen.

Air Mobility Command commander Gen. Paul Silva cited the budget uncertainty in the Pentagon in describing his decision to cancel the rodeo. The Defense Department is carrying out $50 billion in forced budget cuts this year because of Congress? failure to avert the so-called ?sequester.?

?It is very unfortunate we have to cancel. This is an important and uniquely useful event for mobility air forces and our international partners. We?ll get back to holding rodeo as soon as we can,? Selva said.

It?s not a surprise that the Air Force is pulling back on the event. It announced last month that its famous Thunderbirds demonstration team would not participate in air shows this year. They visited Lewis-McChord for an air show last summer that drew more than 150,000 attendees.

Rodeos have been cancelled in the past because of wartime needs at the start of the Iraq War, and because of budget shortfalls in 1988.

The rodeo is less visible to the public than McChord?s biannual air show, but it?s an event airmen look forward to because it gives them an opportunity to meet their peers from around the world as they demonstrate their skills in air drops and timed tests.

Lt. Col. Patrick Kearney of McChord?s 446th Reserve Air Lift Wing, for instance, remembers learning from air mobility rodeos in the 1980s. Those competitions shaped his career as a navigator. He went on to win rodeo contests in subsequent years.

?When it?s done, you?re exhausted,? he said. ?Everybody who comes ? even if you lose ? you go away with a great experience.?

He more recently took a hand in planning rodeo competitions at McChord. He fondly remembers the 2005 rodeo that brought Pakistan for the first time. Its crew arrived with a ?beat-up? C-130 that took work to keep in the air.

?Everybody pitched in to make sure that aircraft was flyable,? he said.

The Pakistan crews learned a great deal from their international peers and put the experience to work that year in delivering emergency supplies to a victims of a devastating earthquake in their country, Kearney said.

The contest unfolds in the daytime while crews gather at night in a ?tent city? where they play games and relax together. That downtime represents another opportunity for them to learn from each other.

?Air crews are air crews and they have an affinity for each other,? Kearney said.

Rep. Adam Smith, D-Bellevue, called the decision to cancel the rodeo an ?example of how the fiscal uncertainty and across-the-board cuts of sequestration are negatively impacting Washington State.?

?Is very disappointing that this training event has been cancelled, but I understand the decision since mission-essential requirements are prioritized over events like these,? said Smith, the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee.

Students in Hillsboro Century High School Software Entrepreneurs ...

The students in Century High School's new Software Entrepreneurs' Club are plunging into the world of technology startups.

They've completed a solid version of their first Windows 8 application - a tool for community members to browse volunteering and donating opportunities at the school. And now the club is competing in a Microsoft apps for social good contest, with a $10,000 prize for the application that receives the most online votes. Voters can choose their favorite app until midnight Friday March 15.

While technology companies often lament the lack of computer science education in the classroom, the Software Entrepreneurs' Club aims to give its members the full business experience of a technology startup, from coding, to marketing to financing. The club filed as a non-profit so that they can own the apps they create, said teacher adviser Chris Winikka. Their goal is to launch the volunteer app beyond Century High School and bring in revenue with transaction fees or requests for donations on the app itself.

"We are making something that works and putting it out there, so people can actually use it," said 17-year-old junior Lars Lawrenson.

Hillsboro Unified School District programmer Rick Dedrick, who spent 27 years in the business world, including with Intel, also advises the club. Funding from the remainder of a $20,000 Intel grant in 2011 and a $10,000 Microsoft grant was used to purchase tablets, phones and to make a promotional video.

Microsoft's Jerry Smith, the corporate liaison to the club, said the Software Entrepreneurs' Club is the first of its kind among the dozens of schools in the Pacific Northwest that he works with.

"It's unique in that it gets kids excited about programming and developing a whole business model around coding," Smith said.

In a recent afterschool meeting, the students grappled with the same questions many tech entrepreneurs face every day: How do we persuade an investor to fund us? Do we pursue another application and risk breaking our focus?

Of course, a high school can't provide the full business experience. Instead of an ultra-modern startup office, the students work in a computer lab with a Napoleon Dynamite poster peering down on them. Those computers are too old to program Windows 8 applications, so they share developer tablets donated by Microsoft. And with homework, sports and jobs - these students can't focus exclusively on the apps all day.

With two advisers for about 25 active members, many students are teaching themselves how to code using online tutorials. Much of their programming is trial and error.

"We smash keys until something happens," jokes 18-year-old senior Cristina Martinez while peering at a screen of code.

If the students win the Microsoft apps for social good contest, they want to use the money on scholarships. That's because a full investment for the equipment they need runs up to $100,000. The club hopes other sources of funding, including companies and Oregon investment organizations, will pull through next year - after the seniors instrumental in getting the project off the ground have already graduated.

"It won't solve the long term problem," Dedrick, the district programmer, said of the contest money. "It's more important to help the kids who are contributing to go to college next year."

Video: 'Hot spots' ride a merry-go-round on Jupiter

Friday, March 15, 2013

In the swirling canopy of Jupiter's atmosphere, cloudless patches are so exceptional that the big ones get the special name "hot spots." Exactly how these clearings form and why they're only found near the planet's equator have long been mysteries. Now, using images from NASA's Cassini spacecraft, scientists have found new evidence that hot spots in Jupiter's atmosphere are created by a Rossby wave, a pattern also seen in Earth's atmosphere and oceans. The team found the wave responsible for the hot spots glides up and down through layers of the atmosphere like a carousel horse on a merry-go-round.

"This is the first time anybody has closely tracked the shape of multiple hot spots over a period of time, which is the best way to appreciate the dynamic nature of these features," said the study's lead author, David Choi, a NASA Postdoctoral Fellow working at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. The paper is published online in the April issue of the journal Icarus.

Choi and his colleagues made time-lapse movies from hundreds of observations taken by Cassini during its flyby of Jupiter in late 2000, when the spacecraft made its closest approach to the planet. The movies zoom in on a line of hot spots between one of Jupiter's dark belts and bright white zones, roughly 7 degrees north of the equator. Covering about two months (in Earth time), the study examines the daily and weekly changes in the sizes and shapes of the hot spots, each of which covers more area than North America, on average.

Much of what scientists know about hot spots came from NASA's Galileo mission, which released an atmospheric probe that descended into a hot spot in 1995. This was the first, and so far only, in-situ investigation of Jupiter's atmosphere.

"Galileo's probe data and a handful of orbiter images hinted at the complex winds swirling around and through these hot spots, and raised questions about whether they fundamentally were waves, cyclones or something in between," said Ashwin Vasavada, a paper co-author who is based at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., and who was a member of the Cassini imaging team during the Jupiter flyby. "Cassini's fantastic movies now show the entire life cycle and evolution of hot spots in great detail."

Because hot spots are breaks in the clouds, they provide windows into a normally unseen layer of Jupiter's atmosphere, possibly all the way down to the level where water clouds can form. In pictures, hot spots appear shadowy, but because the deeper layers are warmer, hot spots are very bright at the infrared wavelengths where heat is sensed; in fact, this is how they got their name.

One hypothesis is that hot spots occur when big drafts of air sink in the atmosphere and get heated or dried out in the process. But the surprising regularity of hot spots has led some researchers to suspect there is an atmospheric wave involved. Typically, eight to 10 hot spots line up, roughly evenly spaced, with dense white plumes of cloud in between. This pattern could be explained by a wave that pushes cold air down, breaking up any clouds, and then carries warm air up, causing the heavy cloud cover seen in the plumes. Computer modeling has strengthened this line of reasoning.

From the Cassini movies, the researchers mapped the winds in and around each hot spot and plume, and examined interactions with vortices that pass by, in addition to wind gyres, or spiraling vortices, that merge with the hot spots. To separate these motions from the jet stream in which the hot spots reside, the scientists also tracked the movements of small "scooter" clouds, similar to cirrus clouds on Earth. This provided what may be the first direct measurement of the true wind speed of the jet stream, which was clocked at about 300 to 450 mph (500 to 720 kilometers per hour) -- much faster than anyone previously thought. The hot spots amble at the more leisurely pace of about 225 mph (362 kilometers per hour).

By teasing out these individual movements, the researchers saw that the motions of the hot spots fit the pattern of a Rossby wave in the atmosphere. On Earth, Rossby waves play a major role in weather. For example, when a blast of frigid Arctic air suddenly dips down and freezes Florida's crops, a Rossby wave is interacting with the polar jet stream and sending it off its typical course. The wave travels around our planet but periodically wanders north and south as it goes.

The wave responsible for the hot spots also circles the planet west to east, but instead of wandering north and south, it glides up and down in the atmosphere. The researchers estimate this wave may rise and fall 15 to 30 miles (24 to 50 kilometers) in altitude.

The new findings should help researchers understand how well the observations returned by the Galileo probe extend to the rest of Jupiter's atmosphere. "And that is another step in answering more of the questions that still surround hot spots on Jupiter," said Choi.

White House launches 'Being Biden' audio series

Ever wonder what goes through Vice President Joe Biden's head? The White House has just launched an audio series called "Being Biden," where the vice president will share his story of a photograph in which he appears.

The first picture featured in the series is of Biden's serving rolls at a wild game dinner in Delaware earlier this month. The vice president is shaking hands with a man wearing a hunting-style shirt featuring deer in the woods as Biden carries a tong in his other hand.

"Hey folks, I want to tell you about this picture you're looking at," Biden said about the picture. "These are a couple of guys in their hunting shirts that I'm serving a meal to, along with the folks you see in the back gourd and the occasion is once a year the Whitehall Neck Sportsman Club holds a dinner.

"I've been attending it for over 30 years. It's called a wild game dinner and they go out and they hunt for wild game that they then cook up and serve at the Leipsic fire hall, as you see in the background and all the money goes to charity and then there's an auction and they auction off guns and bows and all that money as well goes to originally went to [defray] the costs and expenses of a buddy of theirs who was injured in a hunting accident years ago and now it goes to help people in need."

Biden then detailed how important the right to bear arms responsibly is to himself and hunters.

"They believe there is a Second Amendment right to own a weapon. So do I, but they also believe that it's for self protection and legitimate uses like hunting and these guys have the ethic, an ethic that I find most sportsmen have, one that demands responsibility in terms of their case how you deal with, treat, and store your weapons, and there's an ethic that they have that says we're going to help those in our community who are in need," Biden said. "I know these guys, and I know an awful lot of them. I've been doing it for over 30 years. They're my friends, but the point is they are absolutely, totally responsible."

The vice president noted that today marks three months since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut and urged Congress to pass gun legislation to help prevent such a tragedy in the future.

"This is the third-month anniversary of those twenty beautiful little babies who were massacred up in Connecticut in Sandy Hook and those six brave teachers and administrators that tried to protect them. And the country cries for responsible action, to do everything we can to see to it that these kinds of events don't happen again," he said.

"I'm pleased to say the Judiciary Committee, that's the committee in the United States Senate has passed out the major elements of what we've proposed. They've passed out a gun-trafficking piece of legislation, a universal background check piece, a school safety piece, and I think they're going to do more," Biden said.

"I think it's time the United States Congress act responsibly now and seriously debate the pieces of legislation we've talked about so that we can get to a position where we actually make our communities safer for our children, make our schools safer, and make society safer."

FDA probes new pancreas risks with diabetes drugs

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration is looking into new evidence that a group of recently approved diabetes drugs can increase the risk of pancreatitis and other problems.

The agency said Thursday samples of pancreas tissue taken from a small number of patients showed inflammation and cellular changes that often precede cancer. Academic researchers took the samples from diabetes patients who were taking the new medications, after they died from various causes.

Details of the research have not yet been published, but the agency said in an online statement it is seeking more information.

While the FDA has issued previous alerts about the pancreatitis risk, the agency had not notified the public about pre-cancerous cell changes seen with the drugs.

For now, regulators say they are still investigating the issue.

"FDA has not concluded these drugs may cause or contribute to the development of pancreatic cancer," the agency said in an online statement. "At this time, patients should continue to take their medicine as directed until they talk to their health care professional."

The drugs under review come from a wave of recently approved diabetes medications, including Merck's Januvia and Janumet, Novo Nordisk's Victoza and Bristol-Myers Squibb's Byetta and Bydureon, among others. All the drugs mimic natural hormones that the body usually produces to spur insulin production after a meal.

People with type 2 diabetes are unable to properly break down carbohydrates, either because their bodies do not produce enough insulin or because they've become resistant to the hormone, which controls blood sugar levels. These patients are at higher risk for heart attacks, kidney problems, blindness and other serious complications.

Many diabetics require multiple drugs with different mechanisms of action to control their blood sugar levels.

With more than 25 million people living with diabetes in the U.S., some of the world's biggest drugmakers have launched new treatments in recent years, though safety questions have emerged.

The FDA previously added information about cases of pancreatitis, some of them fatal, to the labels of Byetta in 2007, Januvia and Janumet in 2009.

A recent study of insurance records found that use of those drugs could double the risk of developing acute pancreatitis, according to the FDA.

Januvia is a once-a-day pill. Janumet combines the drug with metformin, a decades-old drug commonly prescribed for diabetes. Byetta is a twice-a-day injection originally developed by Amylin Pharmaceuticals. Bristol-Myers acquired the drug last year, along with the newer formulation Bydureon, which is taken once-a-week.

Byetta and Bydureon are part of a drug class that mimics the GLP-1 hormone, triggering insulin production after a meal. Januvia and Janumet work by blocking the DPP-4 enzyme, which spurs release of more insulin from the pancreas.

The pancreas produces various hormones, including insulin, that help the body break down sugar. Pancreatitis causes an inflammation of the organ and can lead to fatal complications, including difficulty breathing and kidney failure.

Shares of Whitehouse Station, N.J.-based Merck & Co. Inc. fell 50 cents to $44.09 in midday trading. Shares of New York-based Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. declined 30 cents to $38.19.

How to spot a Loan shark | Fathead & Braindead's Guide to Finance ...

Loan sharks are easy to spot since they operate in similar ways. They are not licensed as lenders as reflected in the Consumer Credit Public Register. You won?t be given any paperwork when you borrow which is why it is difficult to trace how much you owe. They charge very high interest and may result to violence when you can?t pay.

loan sharks

There are no regulations in this kind of loan. Hence, the lender is not intervened by strict policies. Because of this, these lenders can charge late payment fees much more than legal borrowing institutions. The combination of high-interest rates charged and excessive late fees contribute to the increasing bankruptcy of individuals particularly in New York, USA and other countries like Korea. This kind short-term borrowings prey on people?s weakness until they are robbed off empty.

If you come to think of it, the borrowers are hopeless in paying their loan while the loan sharks are gaining huge amount of money for their profits. If the rustler does not pay or provide false information they will face criminal charges which makes them prone to harassment by illegal moneylenders and in reality, there has been plenty of complaints against loanshark harassment. If you look at it on a different point of view, there will be no moneylenders if there are no borrowers which are the main target. Campaigns for awareness on the risk or dangers of seeking for the service of moneylenders should be recommended to lessen and even eradicate this group by not allowing them self to be a victim. The secret in order to avoid this is to make payments on time and to make it a point that you always have enough savings to help you go through those hard times and If I recommend, please do note that if you have limited funds should then it should follow that you should also not overspend.

The content provided here are not meant to recommend any tips or advertising of these groups nor giving you a hint as to what?s compatible for your short-term need but rather with the intent to serve as an eye-opener for those who are having thoughts about it and for those who are already victims of it since at the end of the day, it will still be you who is going to make the decision. A Home credit loan shark is the most expensive type since the capital money will have an interest than can be as high as 1000% (please do note that this is a fact), terms and conditions are in print, they are bureau approved, and they usually have a website and facebook account offering their services and an agent will be collecting the payment at your doorstep which may sound very convenient. The second type are the Payday Handler who offers small loan amount with very high interest rates which can be paid short-term for a borrower with unexpected expenses like healthcare ,however, this is still expensive since the interest will continue to accumulate up until you have paid the full amount. Collateral Loans and their lender are those who offer an amount in exchange for something that is valuable like your house title, mobile phones or car and they will keep the collateral item up until you have returned the full amount with interest. You may have heard similar descriptions as stated above in a blog, in media like BBC, TV, and websites like FAQs, Moneyweb, Huffpost, Yahoo which then spread like a virus all over the world from North to South and from East to West.

People should be careful even in short-term loans. One should be vigilant enough to sense the predatory terms of these exploits. These people are really and even amazingly being represented accurately on TV shows. Borrowers should be careful by checking the loan agreements and hear first intelligent voices. before diving into the unknown.

Teaming Wes Welker with Peyton Manning has John Elway excited about the possibilities for the Denver Broncos.

The former New England star receiver and longtime favorite target of Tom Brady signed a two-year deal with the Broncos on Tuesday, highlighting a busy Day 2 of NFL free agency.

"When you look at Wes in the middle of the field, you can't cover him," said Elway, the Broncos' boss. "He does such a tremendous job of getting open, finding seams in zones, beating man-to-man coverage. So, he'll be a huge asset for us inside."

Welker joins the Broncos, who had the AFC's best regular-season record last year, and gives Manning one of the steadiest targets the four-time league MVP has ever had. The best slot receiver in the league, Welker caught 118 passes for 1,354 yards and six TDs last season. That the Broncos are signing a top player away from New England certainly didn't hurt, either.

"Anytime you can take a player from a team you have to compete against, it helps, especially the caliber of Wes Welker," Elway said. "New England is there year in and year out and that's a team we have to beat to get where we want to get."

Denver also came to terms on a two-year deal with defensive tackle Terrance Knighton, formerly of Jacksonville, and a one-year contract with linebacker Stewart Bradley, who played with the Cardinals the past two seasons. Later in the evening, the team added cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie with a one-year deal.

Also getting new deals were Reggie Bush in Detroit, Dashon Goldson in Tampa Bay, and even Ray Lewis ? with ESPN.

Bush agreed to a four-year deal and could fill a huge hole at running back. The Lions haven't been able to count on 2010 first-round draft pick Jahvid Best, whose career is in doubt because of concussion issues.

"It's a running back's dream," Bush said. "One of the reasons I wanted to come here is to be able to bring a balanced attack."

Bush adds to a strong offense led by record-setting All-Pro receiver Calvin Johnson. The second overall pick in 2006 by New Orleans, Bush rushed for 986 yards for Miami last season after gaining 1,086 yards in 2011, his first year with the Dolphins.

"The thing that was important to us was not just the talent of Reggie Bush, but also the way those talents complemented the other players we have on offense," coach Jim Schwartz said. "That was really the basis of our interest in Reggie."

The Lions also landed safety Glover Quin and defensive end Jason Jones and retained cornerback Chris Houston.

All-Pro safety Goldson gets a five-year contract worth $41.25 million. He receives $8.25 million per year and $22 million in guaranteed money. He spent the past two seasons on one-year contracts with the 49ers, including last year with the franchise tag for $6.2 million.

"Hard work really pays off. I remember signing up to play football, hiding it from my mom," as a youngster growing up in Harbor City, Calif., Goldson said. "My journey, I wouldn't say it was rough, but it was a little rocky."

Free agent defensive back Charles Woodson had a meeting with the NFC champion Niners in the Bay Area on Wednesday, according to his agent, Carl Poston.

Also Wednesday, former Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Glenn Dorsey signed a two-year contract after meeting with the Niners. The deal could pay Dorsey up to $7 million with incentives, a person with knowledge of the contract told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because terms weren't announced.

One day after signing five players to contracts, Pro Bowl safety LaRon Landry became the Indianapolis Colts' newest addition by signing a four-year contract with Indy late Wednesday night.

Last season, with the New York Jets, he was selected to the AFC's Pro Bowl team after recording a career-high 113 tackles, matching his career-high with two interceptions and forcing four fumbles.

Cleveland remained active, agreeing to terms with linebacker Quentin Groves and tackle Desmond Bryant to further bolster a defense that added Ravens linebacker Paul Kruger hours after free agency began.

Kruger is one of many Super Bowl winners to leave the Ravens, including hard-hitting safety Bernard Pollard, who was released Wednesday. The biggest loss for Baltimore was an expected departure: Lewis announced in early January that he was ending his 17-year career. Then he led the Ravens to the championship.

On Wednesday, he joined ESPN as a studio analyst ? an intense one, no doubt.

"I'm ready to bring the same level of passion to this next phase of my life as I brought to the field during my years as a player," Lewis said.

Baltimore signed defensive lineman Chris Canty, offensive lineman Ramon Harewood and running back Damien Berry.

Kansas City added cornerback Dunta Robinson, receiver Donnie Avery and offensive lineman Bryan Mattison to the three free agents it signed the previous day when the marketplace opened.

Chicago released tight end Kellen Davis and also terminated the contract of tight end Matt Spaeth after signing Martellus Bennett away from the Giants on Tuesday to replace him.

The Giants signed 11-year veteran place kicker Josh Brown, who joins former Cowboys kicker David Buehler on the roster and apparently indicating free agent Lawrence Tynes won't be back. Tynes has made winning field goals in two NFC championship games in overtime and the Giants went on to win the Super Bowl in those seasons.

Arizona, in dire need of help in the backfield, agreed on a one-year contract with former Steelers starter Rashard Mendenhall. For three of his seasons, Mendenhall's offensive coordinator was new Cardinals coach Bruce Arians.

The Cardinals also cut free safety Kerry Rhodes, a move that cleared $6 million in salary cap space, and added cornerback Jerraud Powers, safety Yeremiah Bell, linebacker Lorenzo Alexander and quarterback Drew Stanton.

Also Wednesday:

?Tennessee introduced four new players late Wednesday with guard Andy Levitre, running back Shonn Greene, defensive tackle Sammie Lee Hill and tight end Delanie Walker. A couple hours later, they also agreed to terms with linebacker Moise Fokou. They also re-signed their own fullback Quinn Johnson.

?Miami already had signed linebacker Dannell Ellerbe and added to that unit Wednesday by giving Philip Wheeler a five-year contract, worth $26 million, half of that guaranteed. He spent his first four NFL seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and played last season for the Raiders, where he had career highs of 109 tackles and three sacks.

The Dolphins released linebackers Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett.

?Minnesota re-signed LB Erin Henderson and WR Jerome Simpson, while Washington did the same with DE Kedric Golston.

?Buffalo addressed a need at linebacker by signing seven-year veteran Manny Lawson. The Bills are switching from a 4-3 alignment to a 3-4 under new coordinator Mike Pettine.

?The New York Jets re-signed fullback Lex Hilliard to a one-year contract, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team had not yet announced the move. Hilliard was signed in the middle of last season to replace John Conner.

?The Dallas Cowboys are releasing veteran defensive tackle Marcus Spears, with the move designated for June 1, when it will save the Cowboys $2 million against the salary cap. Spears, who turned 30 last week, was the second of two first-round picks after DeMarcus Ware in 2005.

?Seattle and defensive end Cliff Avril reached agreement on a deal that addresses one of Seattle's big offseason concerns, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The agreement was still pending a physical.

?Pittsburgh found its backup to QB Ben Roethlisberger in a Steel City native, Bruce Gradkowski. The 30-year-old Gradkowski is 6-14 as a starter with Oakland, Cleveland and Tampa Bay. He spent the 2011-12 seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, appearing in five games.

Pittsburgh also released oft-injured offensive lineman Willie Colon.

?Jacksonville released receiver Laurent Robinson, the latest high-priced player let go as part of the team's rebuilding project. Robinson signed a five-year, $32.5 million free agent-contract last season before missing considerable time with concussions.
