The Book of Oa

The Book of Oa is the first written document of Law and Order as well as code of conduct for the whole of the Green Lantern Corps. In it's pages are the entire history of the Corps as well as a listing all of significant events in the organization as it occurs. Each page is written by the creator of the Corps, Jordane himself.

The primary tenants of a Green Lantern are as follows.

1. The protection of life and liberty within the assigned sector.
2. Following the orders of the Guardian without question.
3. Noninterference with a planet's culture, political structure, or its population's collective will.
4. Acting within local laws and obeying the local authority within reason. -Addendum The Guardians orders can overrule this when necessary-
5. Taking no action against anyone or anything until they are proven to be a threat against life and liberty.
6. Refusing to use the equipment, resources or authority of The Corps for personal gain.
7. Showing respect for and cooperating with other members of the Corps and the Guardian.
8. Showing respect for life which includes restraint of force unless there is no reasonable alternative.
9. Giving top priority to the greatest danger in the assigned sector.
10. Upholding the honor of the Corps.

Chief Duties of a Green Lantern within their designated sector.

A Green Lantern's primary function is to serve as an inter-galactic police officer dedicated to protecting sentient life in every form. The Corps as are each individual Lantern are also expected to provide humanitarian and relief support in times of great strife and hardship. Dealing with cosmic threats are no more out of scope for a Lantern as stopping petty crime.

Each Lantern upon assignment to a sector is encouraged to make a formal introduction to nations of note. In this meeting a Lantern is to state his/her duties and intentions as well as answer any and all reservations and question the leader/leaders may have about the Corps as a whole. It is in the hopes that the Corps and the individual Green Lantern can build a lasting, and cooperative relationship with any and all nations in their sector to better serve the community and citizens they are sworn to protect.

Throughout the course of an investigation or patrol route Green Lanterns are permitted a significant measure of autonomy, granting them the authority to make arrest, search and seizures, interrogation and if needed executions on the spot at the discretion of the individual Lantern. Despite this level of freedom Green Lanterns are expected to adhere and operate within all current laws and regulations of whatever governing body they are currently working in, assuming that those laws do not inhibit the Lanterns ability to do his/her duty or if otherwise under specific orders by the Guardian.
